Introductions

My name is Alijan and I’m a BA/MA student at Stony Brook University. I was first introduced to video games in kindergarten. My mom would leave me surprises on my bed to come home to after school. She would leave things like pomegranates (my favorite fruit) or new clothes. One day, I came home to a Gameboy Advance with a copy of a Spongebob video game. I got mad at her because it wasn’t Thomas the Train. I didn’t play it much because of that. Eventually, I revisited Bikini Bottom and couldn’t put video games down since. I still have that Gameboy, but leaked battery acid has rendered it unusable.

Though I think I have my writing voice already, at least in the essay form, I do not know what angle I will be taking for my video game pieces. Likewise, these blogs shall be shorter than the essays I have grown accustomed to. Since I come from an analytical background in English, I would like to utilize conventional literature approaches towards video games to provide some insight in how to improve an existing game, all the while critiquing it. Though, as I write this angle is sure to develop.

I am particularly interested in story of games; I find that story-telling in video games does not realize that the art has existed and matured for thousands of years already. Hopefully, through future articles, this sentiment develops and evidences itself further.

Let’s see where this goes, and thank you for being there with me.

I speak enquiring and doubting. — Montaigne
